US-based Bitcoin mining company CleanSpark is working to restore power to all of its facilities after Hurricane Helen caused severe flooding, power outages and damage across several US states.
After the storm hit on September 27, CleanSpark was forced to shut down its 365-megawatt mining center in Georgia, temporarily reducing the company’s hashrate from 28 exahashes per second (EH/s) to just 10.5 EH/s.
However, CleanSpark has restored 200MW of electricity, bringing the company’s hashrate to 22 EH/s.
CleanSpark CEO Zach Bradford stated in a statement on September 30th that the remaining 165 megawatts of electricity are expected to be restored before October 4th.
“Our crews are fully prepared to restore normal operation as soon as power is restored,” Bradford added.
Despite the impact of its Georgia center, CleanSpark was able to maintain more than 10.5 EH/s of hashrate by relying on other hash centers in North Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. CleanSpark’s infrastructure was also relatively unscathed by the storm, with Hurricane Helen rated a Category 4 out of 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Intensity Scale.
Bradford also confirmed that “we have not found any significant damage to our mining servers and will continue to investigate once power is restored,” adding that “most importantly, everyone on our team is safe.”
In terms of overall damage, Hurricane Helen has killed at least 137 people and wreaked havoc in seven US states: Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. It has reported wind speeds of up to 140 mph, causing road closures and severe flooding in many areas, and the death toll is expected to rise as many people remain missing.
Meanwhile, the global Bitcoin hashrate has fluctuated significantly, fluctuating between 538 EH/s and 745 EH/s since Hurricane Helen hit on Sept. 27, according to data from CoinWarz.
